LMI's 'A word for your week' devotional taken from Psalm 23:5

Jehovah Nissi - The Lord is My Banner.

“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows." - Psalm 23 v4

Sometimes when the shepherd was taking the sheep back over the hills to the sheepfold, he stopped at a flat place called a table. This allowed the sheep to graze and rest on their journey. He provided food for them and kept them safe from enemies.

The oil was applied to injuries and water refreshed the sheep after a hot day in the sun. The psalmist was thanking the Lord for looking after his spiritual and physical needs.

Moses declared ‘The Lord is My Banner ‘after the victory of Joshua against the Amalekites Exodus 17:15. Looking forward to the coming of Jesus Isaiah said ‘In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples’ Isaiah 11:10

As we follow our shepherd, His banner of love surrounds us to protect and provide for our needs. S of S 2:4 ‘He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love’ The Lord gives us food from His Word as we read it, and the oil of gladness in our hearts as His Holy Spirit indwells us. He supplies abundantly Psalm 31:19 ‘O how abundant is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you’.

Our cup overflows with God’s goodness daily. ‘May we shout for joy over your salvation and in the name of our God set up our banners!’ Psalm 20:5.
