In this edition of our Immanuel devotional series, Lorna Wilkinson highlights a title of Christ for our first ‘M’ - Mighty God 👑🏔

“For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 (ESV).

The first Christmas was an amazing fulfilment of a prophecy made by Isaiah more than 700 years earlier. Immanuel - the helpless baby - was also Mighty God.

In Colossians 1:15, we are told, “He [Jesus] is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.” And, in Philippians 2:6-7, we read, “Who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.”

The Creator, Sustainer and Judge of the universe came down, truly human and truly divine [the Hypostatic Union], and dwelt with humanity 🌻🌎

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God … And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:1, 1:14 📖

MIGHTY GOD lay in the manger. Indeed, He planned Christmas before the foundation of the world (1 Peter 1:20).

“King of heaven now the Friend of sinners,
Humble servant in the Father’s hands,
Filled with power and the Holy Spirit,
Filled with mercy for the broken man.
Yes, He walked my road and He felt my pain,
Joys and sorrows that I know so well;
Yet His righteous steps give me hope again –
I will follow my Immanuel”.
