LMI 2022 Easter devotional series - Advocate

Continuing our Easter devotional series, Lorna Wilkinson is zooming in on the letter ‘A’ this week, as she considers a short word but a word full of depth and eternal importance – Advocate 📖💬.

“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” 1 John 2:1-2 (ESV)

In legal terms, an advocate is a person who is professionally qualified to plead the cause of another in a court of law.

The Bible declares all humanity guilty before God, but Christ is an advocate for those who have placed their faith and trust in Him alone for salvation. He has the right to represent us before the throne of heaven. When He cried, “it is finished” from the cross (John 19:30), He was declaring that His death paid the price of our redemption. He paid it all, completely and permanently ✝️🔚.

A popular contemporary hymn – ‘Yet not I, but through Christ in me’ by CityAlight – includes this verse:

“To this I hold, my Shepherd will defend me
Through the deepest valley He will lead
Oh the night has been won, and I shall overcome!
Yet not I, but through Christ in me”

The Saviour purchased our salvation with His own life. If we are in Christ, we have the right to call ourselves children of God – “But to all who did receive Him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” John 1:12.

As our advocate, He continually intercedes for us and will keep us until that great day when we stand before Him in glory. This Easter, may we celebrate our great inheritance in Christ 🙌🏻🙂.

1 Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea;
a great High Priest whose name is Love,
who ever lives and pleads for me.

My name is graven on his hands,
my name is written on his heart.
I know that while in heav'n he stands
no tongue can bid me thence depart,
no tongue can bid me thence depart.

2 When Satan tempts me to despair
and tells me of the guilt within,
upward I look and see him there
who made an end of all my sin.

Because the sinless Savior died,
my sinful soul is counted free;
for God the just is satisfied
to look on him and pardon me,
to look on him and pardon me.

3 Behold him there, the risen Lamb,
my perfect, spotless righteousness,
the great unchangeable I AM,
the King of glory and of grace.

One with himself, I cannot die;
my soul is purchased by his blood.
My life is hid with Christ on high,
with Christ my Savior and my God,
with Christ my Savior and my God.
